Nowadays it seems celebrities and the media love to jump on the bandwagon or ride the latest trend. These days everyday tragedies are getting a lot of attention. Rarely do you see a story about everyday people going through some real sh*t get as much attention as a celebrity going through the exact same thing. The only difference could be their bank balances and a drug/alcohol addiction. Why should a celebrity's situation be on the news everyday when the average Joe's story gets less than 5 minutes of attention before ending up somewhere in the archives? Their story, whether its aired on tv or captured in print, rarely improves their lives for the better. For the celebrity, in some cases, they can turn it into a positive ending...professionally and monetarily.
For the past couple of days I've been hearing about retired boxer's Sugar Ray Leonard coming out with an autobiography. Before I heard anything else about his upcoming book I was already thinking, "What the f*ck is he gonna reveal that we already don't know?" It still surprises me that in this modern age celebrities can still pull something out of their closet that will blow people's minds. I was shocked to hear the former champ say he was sexually abused by one of his former coaches when he was a teen. Women, famous or not, have a hard time coming forward with such an encounter. It is far rarer to see a man, especially one as famous as Sugar Ray, to come out with this publicly. If this was anybody else I would think they were more concerned about the paper. This doesn't seem like a desperate act to move books to me. I just find it interesting how some celebrities would use a personal tragedy for their career's benefit.
With the Chris Brown and Rihanna drama, I felt like she and her camp CLEARLY used it to her advantage. Sure they tried to say she was doing it for the little girls and women who are currently victims of abuse but I don't think too many people were buying it. The only reason I think she got away with the shameless strategy was because she was a woman and Chris Brown really did a number on her. Also, in the beginning of this sh*t storm business was probably slow for the news so they had no problem giving her story attention and her career a boost. The muthaf*ckas in the media only care about happy endings they can script or further their own agendas. Don't believe me? Well when was the last time you heard about the homeless man with the "Golden Voice"? His alcoholic ass haven't been heard from in a minute. He's probably back on the streets living the wino life making false weather predictions for a nickel for all we know.
These celebrities need to keep their sh*t to themselves if they're not really trying to help somebody. I mean if you're not going to personally share your story with normal people still going through it then you need to cut a check to a foundation or non-profit organization that can help them. I mean how much money do you guys really need? If you guys can go on a nationwide tour selling your books or talk live on the news about your dark past then you can easily reach out to communities nationwide in some capacity where it would really matter. Helping the helpless is more valuable to me than a check from your publisher.
What do you guys think? Let's talk about it.
